Strategies for Staying Connected to People You Care About

If you work away from home, it can often be difficult to keep in touch with those you care about. And while it can seem like a hassle to figure out how to do it without the right guidance, it is possible. The information below will help you keep tabs on the people you care about in your life more than ever before.

Communication Apps

Use technology to stay in touch by taking advantage of the various communication apps that exist today. From social media to messaging apps to email, you can find ways to share what your day is like and see updates from the lives of the people you want to be involved with.

Schedule Meetups

Even if you are not as close as you would like to be most of the time, you can still find ways to see your loved ones and others you want to stay close to. The easiest way to do this is to schedule specific times to chat on the phone or video chat on the computer.

Set your family home up with high-speed internet, and you can plan weekly family dinners where you Skype and ‘eat together’ as a family. While this isn’t the same as being there in person, you may be surprised by how close you feel to your loved ones. Just remember that once you schedule a time to connect, treat it as a golden place in your calendar. Don't move it for anything unless it's life or death. Business is important, but it can wait.

Instant Chats

In addition to looking at photos or sending those of your own through social media, you can act like you're in the same room as someone with instant chats. Slack, Facebook, and WhatsApp all allow you to use wifi to act as a phone, even if you're in another country. What's more, you can do video chats, which is the next best thing to actually be there. So if you’re away from your computer, you can still connect with your loved ones face-to-face.

Share Pics & Vids

The time you spend with someone is not really measured in length, but the value of that time together. So while you might not get to see your family as often as you would like, you can make up for it. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so be sure to take pictures and videos on the road with you. That way, if you are ever missing your friends and loved ones, you’ll have memories to fall back on while on the road.

When it comes to working away from your home, it's never something that's easy. However, it can be made better by finding ways to connect to the people close to you. Then, you'll feel a greater connection, whether you're in another state or another country. So use the advice above and stay in touch now and in the future.
